Best Practices are Not the Best

"Best practices" is a weak term that people often use in an attempt to gain someone's confidence and trust, or to build their own confidence.

If the term was meaningful, and something really was a "best practice," then everyone would be following the practice and everyone would be succeeding.

But how could that be? It doesn't seem to be the reality.

Better statements might be:

  • I think...
  • I have observed...
  • My recommendation is...
  • This will be your practice for now, as long as it works for you
