Below is a curation of social media trends that are not necessarily specific to one year, but simply that I think are interesting.

Scrutinizing Technology

  • Facebook, Twitter, and more have been criticized for their impact on privacy, social injustice, usage by malicious forces, and more.

Technology Can Bring Change

Technology, like new apps and no-code software, can be a powerful tool in the hands of creators and individuals. The impact can be multiplied when a community comes together with shared purpose.

Facebook, Amazon, and other large companies may offer many features, but that doesn't mean that they all offer a great experience. People may have a better experience with newer, simpler tools. Industries and platforms continue to unbundle - for example: finance/banking (cryptocurrency, direct investing), retail (StockX, reselling), and more.

Simplicity and Health

  • Decluttering digital files
  • Deleting apps
  • Deleting social media accounts (at least temporarily)
  • Moving to niche sites/platforms/communities that focus on one thing
  • A greater focus on mental health

Creator Power

  • People are not being labeled as one thing
  • Content creates value across categories (e.g., gaming, music, clothing)
  • Entertainment is powerful
  • Platforms like TikTok are helping people be discovered

Open Source

  • Many brands and people struggle in silence, privately
  • There is an opportunity to reveal vulnerability, questions, an unfinished state
  • And to publicly solicit ideas and feedback
